Full plot (contains spoilers)
Mathieu Guibert is a renowned pianist. His mother is ill and has to spend some time in the hospital. He decides to leave his wife (who is also his agent) and his son for a while so he can look after his mother. She asks him to keep an eye on Paul, his somewhat troubled and above all antisocial younger brother. Paul is passionate about historical battles, which he experiences through role-playing games. He regularly meets the other members of this role-playing group deep in the forest, where they reenact the Napoleonic Wars on a life-size scale, including the Battle of Wagram. Paul manages to persuade Mathieu to join him in his “historical” activities. At first, Mathieu agrees only to keep an eye on his brother. But he gets caught up in the game: in the Napoleonic soirées held in enormous manor houses, where he is heard playing the pianoforte; in the forest bivouacs; and in the duels fought to restore his honor. He is trapped and tries to escape from this world, governed by very strict rules and conventions…
