Full plot (contains spoilers)
Herbert Herz has taken up hunting for some time now and brings home the occasional hunting trophy. Just as he is indulging in his hobby again, Cantor Anselm Rosenknecht turns up at Margot Herz’s house in a great state of excitement and asks for help. A sounder of wild boar has invaded his garden, and he wants her husband to deal with it. Herbert recently shot the fearsome boar from Keilsberg and is known around the neighborhood as a supposed hunting expert. He sets off to deal with the matter as soon as he has hung his new trophy on the wall. On the way, he meets his old friend Ossi Brettschneider and tells him the truth about his new hobby. His wife thought the fresh air would be good for him and his health, so, to please her, he took up hunting—only in theory—and always regales her with lengthy accounts of his exciting hunting adventures. But he never intended to kill animals. He earns his trophies by doing masonry work for other people, without his wife knowing. He earned the boar’s head from Keilsberg by working for Otto Schickedanz, but Otto now suddenly wants it back. This leaves Herbert struggling to explain himself to his wife, Margot—especially when Otto’s wife recognizes the trophy in Margot’s living room as her own boar’s head. As luck would have it, Herbert’s friend Ossi has acquired another boar’s head so that Schickedanz’s can be returned. They switch the trophies and solve the problem easily. Alongside all this turmoil, Herbert also has to deal with the pigs Anselm Rosenknecht saw. They are not wild pigs, however, but three hand-reared animals that had run away from Herbert’s hunting friend, Kudde Kosanke. After Margot discovers Herbert’s secret, she also confides in her friend Lilo Schickedanz. Together, they teach their husbands a lesson they will not soon forget. In the end, Margot Herz herself even shoots an angry boar that had been causing trouble in the neighborhood for several days.
