Full plot (contains spoilers)

Richard Dämpfing works as the manager of a village shop in Brandenburg and is a passionate hunter. His ambition to shoot a buck in the woods just before the close season begins ends in failure. His son Heinz has played a considerable prank on him by tying antlers onto an award-winning goat, leading Richard astray as a hunter: he “shoots” the goat. Richard then tries to cover up the incident and make it look like an accident. But the award-winning goat’s disappearance soon becomes apparent in the village, and the truth comes to light. Some of the villagers are deeply resentful and gleeful about the mishap, since all kinds of intrigues have already been played out in the village. But the incident has much further-reaching consequences, and eventually the matter ends up before the district hunting commission.
