When a household’s grandmother leaves to marry, the family hires a young man whose presence sparks neighborhood gossip.

The story

The Piesolds’ household is thrown into disarray when Grandma, who has been running the home, gets married and quits. Günter Piesold, a successful television comedian, and Gudrun, a busy actress, cannot manage the house alongside their work, while their three children quickly make a mess of it. They advertise for a replacement, and Erwin Graffunda, a young, attractive and intelligent man, answers. He soon brings order to the home and wins the children’s affection. But the neighbors are suspicious of a handsome man working as the family’s housekeeper, and their gossip about his relationship with Gudrun begins to create trouble.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Piesolds have a problem: Grandma, who has so far run the thriving household of the artist family living in a spacious home, is getting married herself and quits her job. Since Günter Piesold, a successful television comedian, and Gudrun Piesold, a busy actress, have no time to run the household on their own, and the three children quickly turn the place into a huge mess, they need to find a replacement for Grandma Piesold as soon as possible. A young, attractive, and intelligent man named Erwin Graffunda responds to their advertisement. Graffunda soon gets the household under control and wins the Piesold children’s affection. The neighbors, however, start gossiping: surely such a handsome man cannot just be the family’s nanny. The rumors go so far that Graffunda is regarded not only as Gudrun’s secret lover, but is also falsely said to be the father of the youngest daughter, Anne. A scandal erupts, and Graffunda leaves. In the end, however, it turns out that he is working on his dissertation about women’s emancipation and wanted to gain practical experience at the Piesolds’ home. He is also engaged, and his fiancée Marianne is expecting their first child—so all the rumors are disproved in the end.
