When a paternity revelation upends two lifelong fishermen’s friendship, their seaside town watches as the old friends turn against each other.
The story
In a small town on the Baltic coast, fishermen from an older way of life now serve food to tourists as development reshapes the harbor. Veteran fishermen Paul, outspoken and big-mouthed, and Fiete, quiet with a dry wit, have been best friends since early childhood. Their friendship is suddenly tested when Paul discovers that he is not Piet’s father as he had always believed. The revelation pits the two very different men against one another, while Piet is unwillingly caught between them and the townspeople look on with amusement.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A small town on the Baltic coast. Fishermen of old now serve food to tourists. Where old, smelly fishing nets used to be a common sight, a parking lot is now being built, and soon there will be parking meters at the harbor for the yachts that are supposed to dock there one day. The two veteran fishermen, Paul and Fiete, still have no idea about any of this. Paul, known for his big mouth, and Fiete, a rather quiet man with a dry wit, have been best friends since early childhood. But their friendship is put to the test. Paul learns that he is not Piet’s father, as he had always taken for granted, but that his best friend is … Fiete! And that means war between the two very different men. They now set about making each other’s lives hell—to the great amusement of everyone in town. Piet finds himself caught in the middle against his will. His “two” fathers remain irreconcilable. And when something takes a long time here, it really takes a long time.
