Jakob Kisch is a crook who specializes in professional art theft. During a break-in at Villa Wertheim, he suffers a heart attack and is discovered. However, he manages to pass himself off as an employee of a security company, and the paramedics take him to a hospital without knowing his real identity. He escapes from there. His longtime accomplice, Fanni Birek, persuades him to receive treatment at a private rehabilitation clinic, where he poses as a millionaire of Austrian descent from South Africa. At the clinic, Jakob overhears conversations between Police Chief Fellinger and the shady businessman Markus Welk, learning about the pair’s corrupt dealings. Jakob decides to cash in on what he knows. With Fanni’s help, he skillfully manages to win the police chief’s friendship. Together, they throw parties and mix freely with leading figures from business and politics. Eventually, Fellinger trusts Jakob so much that he entrusts him with nearly all of his corruptly acquired cash fortune, asking him to launder it and make it grow. But the police’s Internal Audit has already begun to close in on the chief, and Jakob exposes him using a tape recording. Jakob and Fanni escape with the police chief’s cash without being discovered.
