An East German spy’s investigation of a suspected double agent takes an unexpected turn when he discovers the informant is a woman.

The story

“Karl,” an agent for the GDR’s Ministry for State Security, travels to West Germany under the identity Harald Liebe to investigate “Heinz,” an informant suspected of being a double agent. At their first meeting in Munich, he discovers that Heinz is a woman: Dagmar Ostfeld, the widow of an arms-industry industrialist. Dagmar believes West German intelligence was responsible for her husband’s death in a mysterious company-jet crash. Although she has little regard for the GDR’s interests, she accepts the State Security Service’s offer to cooperate, seeing it as a chance to exact revenge.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

“Karl” is a spy. He works for the Ministry for State Security of the GDR. His new assignment is to investigate an informant codenamed “Heinz,” who is suspected of being a double agent. Traveling under a new identity as Harald Liebe, “Karl” enters West Germany. The very first meeting in Munich goes differently than planned: the informant “Heinz” is a woman. Dagmar Ostfeld is the widow of an industrialist in the arms industry. The head of the MMU development department was killed when the company jet crashed under mysterious circumstances. Dagmar Ostfeld is firmly convinced that her husband was the victim of the West German intelligence service. Although she thinks little of the GDR’s interests, she accepts the State Security Service’s offer to cooperate, because now she can exact revenge in a highly effective way. The chief secretary, who still works at MMU, regularly handles secret documents. It has almost become routine for her to send copies of them to East Berlin by covert means just as regularly. But Harald Liebe’s arrival brings an entirely different partner into the picture, quite unexpectedly. Their strictly professional mutual distrust steadily diminishes, and soon they can no longer resist their mutual attraction. Dagmar Ostfeld is very attractive, and she can afford to shape her life against the luxurious backdrop of an extravagant Western consumer society. She and her daughter Ina not only live in a stylish villa; the two of them seem ideally cast in a production about the downfall of capitalism. Nevertheless—or perhaps precisely because of this—the agent from the East becomes increasingly entangled in an almost labyrinthine trap. As if dazzled, he loses sight of his actual mission more and more. The intelligence services are alarmed.
