The story

Alma is involved with Jan, a married anesthesiologist, and often spends time with him and his seven-year-old son, Juri. Wanting Jan to acknowledge their relationship, she impulsively takes Juri with her on a trip to Berlin. At the train station, she realizes she has forgotten her wallet and asks Bruno, a delivery driver, to take them in his van. Their journey begins amicably, and Alma listens as Bruno shares details about himself. Once she recognizes the gravity of taking Juri, she calls Jan during a stop and asks him to meet them later at a rest stop. But when Jan arrives, Alma and Juri are gone, and she no longer answers her phone.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Alma is the lover of a married anesthesiologist and often spends time with him and his seven-year-old son, Juri. She wants Jan to finally acknowledge their relationship. Hoping to make a statement, on a hot summer’s day she spontaneously takes Juri with her to go to Berlin. But at the train station, she is undone by the wallet she forgot, so she has to ask Bruno, a delivery driver, if he can take them to Berlin in his van. The journey begins on a fairly friendly note, with the eccentric Bruno telling her a little about himself. Alma might be someone who understands him. When Alma comes to her senses about her “kidnapping,” she calls Jan during a stop and asks him to pick them up later from a rest stop. The two of them have something to eat there with Bruno. He makes a pass at her, but Alma refuses to play along and rebuffs him. Jan reaches the rest stop, but he cannot find Alma and Juri there. She no longer answers her phone, either. Jan’s wife has already informed the police that he may have kidnapped Juri. Jan questions all kinds of people. They say the two were with a man, but that was a few hours ago. As Jan is about to leave again, Bruno suddenly knocks on the car window. Based on the information he was given, Jan recognizes Bruno as the man who was with Alma and Juri, and agrees to go for a drink with him at the casino. Bruno toys with Jan and provokes him about his petit-bourgeois life, which Bruno says he should have for himself, too. Bruno wants to show Jan something, and they both go into the woods. There lies Alma’s body. Bruno raped her and then beat her to death. He took the opportunity because the next day he would be a nobody again. The two get into a fight; Jan only wants to know where Juri is. Bruno says Juri did not suffer. Jan then stabs Bruno with the corkscrew Bruno had used against him earlier. Gasping, Bruno gives Jan the van keys. Jan finds Juri, still alive, inside.
