The story

Edda Chiemnyjewski is a freelance press photographer in West Berlin whose earnings barely meet the needs of herself and her daughter. Long working hours, household responsibilities, and caring for her child leave her struggling to preserve a private life and find fulfillment in her work. She tries to pare down her obligations as the routines she has imposed on herself begin to blur. A new project brings her together with other women to photograph the city for images intended for tourism advertising. Rather than simply provide the expected promotional view, the women develop their own perspective, exposing neglected aspects of the city and prompting conflict with the project's funders.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Edda Chiemnyjewski works as a freelance press photographer in West Berlin. Her earnings barely cover the needs of her and her daughter, so she often works late into the evening. On top of that, she has to run the household and attend to her daughter’s needs. She tries, as best she can, to preserve her private life while also finding fulfillment in her work. She can scarcely keep up with the daily routine she has imposed on herself; instead, its structures are beginning to blur. Edda tries to reduce her obligations, follow only a few important strands of life, and let the others go. For a new project, she is to work with other women to capture their vision of the city. The photographs are to be displayed on advertising spaces to promote tourism. However, the women offer a vision of their own, drawing critical attention to neglected aspects. They soon find themselves up against personal and political limits, and the funders are dissatisfied. The women now have to come up with lists, assert their intentions, and confront conflicts. They are not used to maneuvering in a man’s world.
