The story
Identical twins Jochen and Christian Lichtenberg lead very different lives. Jochen runs a struggling taxi company and owes gambling debts, while Christian is an ambitious politician campaigning amid pressure to support a controversial telecommunications bill. Christian’s affair with a lobbyist is discovered by his wife, and a journalist is pursuing the politician’s next scandal. Jochen has fallen for social worker Chantal. When Christian and his son unexpectedly take refuge at Jochen’s taxi company to escape the journalist, Christian is mistaken for his indebted brother by Mr. Fleischer. Christian’s injuries make it difficult for him to appear in the Bundestag, so the twins are forced to switch roles.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The identical twins Jochen and Christian Lichtenberg could hardly be more different. Jochen runs a taxi company in Berlin-Moabit that is doing pretty badly financially, and he owes gambling debts to a certain Mr. Fleischer. Christian, meanwhile, is a conservative politician with great ambitions who is in the middle of an election campaign. His father-in-law is doing everything he can to persuade him to support a controversial telecommunications bill in the Bundestag. For the same reason, Christian is seduced by a lobbyist. Since his phone is on during their encounter, his wife Doro finds out about the affair and initially moves out of their shared home. A journalist is also already sniffing out the politician’s next scandal. Jochen has just fallen in love with Chantal, a committed social worker, but at precisely this moment Christian and his son move into Jochen’s taxi company without warning, in order to escape the journalist. There, however, Christian has an unpleasant encounter with Mr. Fleischer, who takes him for the penniless Jochen. Since Christian’s injuries make it difficult for him to appear as a politician in the Bundestag, the two are forced to switch roles. This also has some positive consequences. In Jochen’s role, Christian takes decisive action against a taxi driver who repeatedly cheats him out of money. Jochen, in Christian’s role, brings more down-to-earthness to politics. Christian’s son David also benefits from his new surroundings: he gets to know people his own age and, after a makeover, becomes more self-confident. But things go wrong amid the elaborate web of lies. Jochen behaves very clumsily during a press event, and on top of that, he tells Chantal that he can save her beloved youth center, which is threatened with closure. When Mr. Fleischer demands his money from Jochen, Jochen, posing as Christian, accepts a bribe from the lobbyists. He decides to take the money to Chantal, but Fleischer intercepts him and takes it from him. Despite his injuries, Jochen goes to the Bundestag session and wants to move the bill forward, as Christian instructed him. However, because of his logophobia, he struggles to express himself properly. Christian arrives just in time, but changes his original plan and speaks out about his father-in-law’s dealings with industry. Christian’s courageous conduct and his public declaration that he loves Doro impress her, and she gives their marriage another chance. Jochen and Christian are pleased that their relationships with Chantal and Doro are developing well. The only disappointment is that the donations will not be enough to keep the youth center open, whereupon David’s new girlfriend says that her father would also contribute some money. The Lichtenbergs receive a suitcase containing enough money from a courier, and to both their surprise, it turns out that David’s girlfriend Amira is Fleischer’s daughter.
