An overwhelmed Berlin designer orders a lookalike household android, only to find that outsourcing her chores brings complications of its own.
The story
Production designer Katrin is overwhelmed by household chores, caring for her two children, and work. Her husband Jan tells her that his company has gone bankrupt just as she takes on a major hotel contract. Hoping to make time for her design work, Katrin orders a customizable household android on a four-week trial. The robot arrives looking exactly like her and, after choosing the name Kate, quickly handles everyday tasks with extraordinary speed and strength. But Kate’s lack of understanding of family discipline and the unexpected appearance of Jan’s guest reveal that managing a double may be more difficult than Katrin anticipated.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Production designer Katrin has to juggle household chores, the children, and her job. She lives with her husband Jan and their two children in a beautiful house with a garden in Berlin, and she is completely overwhelmed. Then Jan tells her that his company has gone bankrupt, while at the same time she has to take on a major contract for the plumbing installations at a design hotel, and she simply can’t take any more. By chance, she finds an online offer for a household android whose appearance can be customized in any way. Since the offer generously includes a four-week trial period, Katrin promptly places an order. When the robot arrives, it looks exactly like her, right down to the last hair. Katrin doesn’t give it a name at first, but after a few arguments the android insists on being called Kate. Katrin now assigns the android all kinds of everyday tasks, which Kate can complete independently at lightning speed. She is also incredibly strong and has a self-learning system that enables her to draw her own conclusions from the situations she experiences and save them to her hard drive. Katrin is delighted and can focus on her design work in peace. The first problem arises when Jan unexpectedly comes home during the day with a guest, and neither Katrin nor Kate is prepared for the visitor. While Katrin hides in the house and tries to give Kate instructions in secret, Kate handles the unpredictable situation by doing whatever the men ask of her and quickly preparing them an excellent meal. At a suitable moment, Katrin manages to call Kate back and “park” her in a closet before Jan notices anything. More problematic is Kate’s outing with the children: she grants Max’s every wish and shows no inclination to discipline Maja, since that wasn’t part of her “program.” Another test comes in the form of an evening event Jan and Katrin are invited to, though Katrin really needs to work because she has not yet finished her major contract and time is running out. Kate behaves terribly, and Katrin discovers that it is because Kate has been eating too much human food. When they try to restrict her authority, Kate becomes defiant. She develops feelings and an insatiable appetite. She also begins taking an interest in Jan, and one day, when he comes home unexpectedly again, the two have sex. Katrin catches them and has to explain to Jan that she got herself a double so she could get all her work done. Jan is furious and demands that Kate be sent back immediately. But when Kate realizes that Katrin intends to shut her down, she fights back and manages to completely take Katrin’s place by having her arrested after a minor car accident. Now everything in the Schreier household goes according to Kate’s plan. At first, Jan doesn’t even notice that the woman at his side isn’t his real wife. After the botched evening at the Belforts’, Katrin had planned to make amends by hosting a garden party. Kate has now organized the whole thing, and it gets off to a good start because she has learned what subjects to bring up in conversation and which ones to avoid. By this point, Katrin has managed to leave the police station. She sneaks into the house and tries to take Kate out of commission without any of the guests realizing there is a double. She only partly succeeds, because her efforts end with the party being thrown into chaos, and everything turns into a disaster. Kate short-circuits and collapses lifelessly to the floor. Max and Maja now realize that they have had two mothers over the past few weeks, though they think it’s cool. Katrin, too, finds it hard to contemplate sending Kate back to work, since Kate unexpectedly helped her complete the contract and even designed a model that the clients immediately liked. After Jan and Maja’s friend manage to “revive” Kate, the family decides to keep her.
