Full plot (contains spoilers)
The carpenter Katharina von Bergerach is a tomboyish young woman with a very bold manner. No one would suspect that beneath her hard, rough exterior she has a soft side. But one day, when the handsome restorer Jakob Steiner comes to her workshop to examine a newly discovered fresco, she falls in love with him. Since she doesn’t dare speak to him, she pours all her feelings into poetic letters addressed to him. The art-loving man is immediately captivated. However, he believes the letters are from the blonde Marie, Katharina’s best friend. Marie really is in love with him; she had previously asked Katharina to help her get closer to Jakob.
