Full plot (contains spoilers)

Armande Colbert, a woman of Parisian high society who is as spoiled as she is bored, and the wife of a famous surgeon, spends her time having numerous love affairs. Her most ardent admirer is the speculator Orliac, though he never quite gets his chance. Armande’s current lover is Jacques, an artist, who is in love with her best friend, Liliane. During his stay in Casablanca, Morocco, the two rivals have a fierce argument over his affections. Jacques happens to overhear the quarrel, jumps into his car, and shortly afterward causes a serious accident in which he dies. Armande Colbert soon consoles herself with another man, Captain Blanchard. One day, anonymous letters arrive for Armande warning that she will die within the next twelve months. Armande suspects Orliac is the “poison pen,” since she has rejected him far too many times. Terrified of death, Armande confesses everything to her husband and remorsefully promises to mend her ways. Professor Colbert forgives her and buys a palace in Marrakesh for himself and his wife. After all the turmoil of recent times and the men in Armande’s life that have threatened their marriage, he hopes at last to find peace with her there. But on the night before their departure, the curse foretold in the letters comes to pass: Liliane, whom Armande betrayed, shoots her in revenge for the loss of her beloved Jacques.
