The story
In the fictional future of 1999, cash has nearly vanished, and people conduct financial transactions solely by credit card. Mike, a clumsy drifter, meets Egon and falls in love with her. Egon is a petty criminal who steals credit cards, and Codinsky blackmails her into working as a repossessor. In this era, repossessors take goods from people who can no longer pay their credit. Mike’s new romance thus draws him into the precarious world Egon has kept secret.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the fictional future of 1999, cash has all but disappeared. Financial transactions are conducted solely by credit card. In this era lives Mike, a clumsy drifter and loser. He meets the pretty Egon and falls in love with her. Egon, however, has a secret. She gets by as a petty criminal who steals credit cards, and the nasty Codinsky blackmails her into working for him as a repossessor. Repossession is a new profession in this era: like bailiffs, repossessors take goods from people who can no longer pay off their credit. Only when Egon confides in Mike, and it turns out that Codinsky is not some big shot at the central bank but merely bossing around the cleaning women, is there hope of finding a way out. Codinsky offers them a deal: help him steal the GMCC, the General Master Code Card. It is the card of all cards, which can be used to transfer all the money in every account. Together with Mike’s friend Löffler, an unsuccessful playboy, they set out to break into the central bank. With a lot of luck and a few daring, adventurous maneuvers, they make it into the GMCC’s vault, where Codinsky once again proves to be a traitor: he leads Mike, Egon, and Löffler into a trap and makes off with the GMCC. But Mike had managed, in an unobserved moment earlier, to swap the GMCC for an ordinary credit card. Codinsky escapes with the wrong card and thereby blows up the central bank’s main computer—and himself—while Mike, Egon, and Löffler get away with the real GMCC.
