At a school for mystical beings, a young vampire who cannot stand the sight of blood befriends an elf afraid of flying and a werewolf with an animal-hair allergy.

The story

Vlad, a young vampire, moves with his father to a town inhabited by mystical beings, where strange transformations begin occurring. The mayor and his assistant take an unusual interest in the small red crystal Vlad wears, a gift from his mother before she died, and try to get it from his father. At school, Vlad befriends Faye, an elf afraid of flying, and Wolf, a werewolf with an animal-hair allergy. Each falls short of expectations for their kind, and after their classmates mock them, the three decide to run away.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Vlad, a young vampire, moves with his father, Barnabas, to a town inhabited only by mystical beings such as vampires, elves, and witches. Strange things start happening right away: a modern bicycle turns into an old-fashioned penny-farthing, causing its rider to fall in front of the vampires’ car, and the policeman’s cap likewise changes into an old-fashioned spiked helmet. The mayor, Louis Ziffer, and his assistant, Mrs. Circemeyer, take an unusually keen interest in the “Blood Shard,” a small red crystal Vlad wears around his neck and received from his mother before she died. They try to persuade Vlad’s father to sell the crystal, and, when he refuses, to steal it—but this fails because a return spell has been placed on it. When Vlad starts seventh grade at school, he befriends Faye, an elf, and Wolf, a werewolf. They all have the same problem: they don’t live up to the expectations for their kinds of mythical creature. At the school’s welcome ceremony, it becomes clear that Vlad can’t stand the sight of blood (he throws up), Faye is afraid of flying, and Wolf is allergic to animal hair (and has to sneeze a lot after transforming). The next day, they become the laughingstock of the school. In despair, the three try to run away, but in the forest they are stopped by the bridge troll, who transforms into a giant. This is unusual, because the bridge troll is only supposed to check who enters the town; everyone should be able to leave. They are then rescued by the janitor, who reveals that he is a wizard. At his home, they learn from a book that there is a record in the forbidden library that can make them heroes. After reaching the book containing the prophecy with great difficulty, they read that they must save the town. Terrible things are supposed to happen during the solar eclipse the next day, and the Devil is to bring the mythical creatures back under his rule—but only if a large red crystal is complete by then. The children sneak into the town hall (Vlad is invisible to the security camera because he is a vampire), and Vlad sees the crystal surrounded by skulls. He runs away and decides to leave town with the Blood Shard to save it, even though he will never be able to return. Faye and Wolf are supposed to stay behind and protect the town. Louis Ziffer (Lucifer) appears and threatens and kidnaps Faye: if Vlad does not bring the Blood Shard to the town hall and hand it over before the solar eclipse, things will go badly for her. Vlad seems to go along with this. But when the town hall clock strikes for the thirteenth time, as the prophecy foretold, the Blood Shard disappears again, and the devil’s takeover does not happen. Vlad had given it to the janitor, so the return spell teleported it to him. A fight follows, which Lucifer loses. The janitor gives the Blood Shard back to Vlad. In the post-credit scene, Vlad’s mother appears as a kind of hologram from the Blood Shard and warns him that “they” will be coming soon.
