The story

PE teacher Frida and her boyfriend Tobias have been trying for a child for two years, while friends around them celebrate pregnancies, baby showers and christenings. Tobias buys her a hamster to cheer her up, but Frida remains focused on conceiving: she tracks her fertile days and consults a doctor about artificial insemination after their attempts fail. Tobias feels the pressure has reduced him to a stud and eventually leaves. In her mid-thirties and newly on her own, Frida faces setbacks in dating and tensions surrounding her mother’s new romance, all while weighing the costly possibility of pursuing artificial insemination.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

PE teacher Frida and her boyfriend Tobias have been trying to have a child for two years. Their friends are expecting babies, and there are baby showers and christenings all around them. To cheer her up and as a substitute, Tobias buys her a hamster, but she puts a great deal of effort into helping her luck along. She meticulously records her fertile days on a calendar and, after their attempts prove unsuccessful, discusses the possibility of artificial insemination with a doctor. Tobias cannot cope with this. He feels that the constant focus on having a child has reduced him to a stud, and eventually leaves Frida. Now in her mid-thirties, she has to manage on her own, especially as her mother also wants to put an end to her life as a widow and meets someone online. Frida’s own attempts to make connections are unsuccessful, while her biological clock keeps ticking relentlessly. Her mother’s new happiness with Hartmut, and the fact that Tobias already has a new girlfriend, make things even harder for her. Since artificial insemination costs a lot of money, she hopes her mother and Hartmut will support her financially, but her mother later refuses. Pages from Frida’s calendar, with obscene drawings added, are posted on Instagram. Combined with entries about her fertile days and notes on her students’ period days, they are a real find for the parents, and Frida has to justify herself at a parents’ evening. Hartmut has also killed Frida’s hamster through a clumsy accident. The next morning, Frida sets off for a maternity clinic in Holland, but immediately turns back when she hears that Hartmut has had a stroke. After visiting her mother in the hospital, Frida goes to her friend Josephin’s, where her friend’s birthday party is underway, and she also runs into Tobias and his new girlfriend. Frida is allowed to hold one of the guests’ babies and asks for schnapps, even though it is an alcohol-free evening out of consideration for the pregnant women. She raises a toast to Tobias and leaves. A short while later, Frida takes part in the Munich Marathon, but leaves the course along the way and continues running down a different street.
