A trainee teacher and his class reinvent an old-fashioned school play, while one boy tries to stay in the classroom that has become his refuge.

The story

In their final year of primary school, Tobias and his best friend Sep are taught by trainee teacher Kees Bruin, whom the children call Mr. Kees. Each year, the pupils perform a play written by headteacher Dreus for residents of a nursing home. This time, Mr. Kees is assigned to guide the production, but he and the children find Dreus’s play old-fashioned and change it, designing new costumes as well. Meanwhile, Tobias is coping with the death of his father and his mother’s changing moods. Hoping to remain with Mr. Kees, he deliberately gives random answers on his Cito test, setting up a conflict between his attachment to his teacher and his next step at school.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Tobias and his best friend Sep are in the eighth and final year of primary school. They are taught by trainee teacher Kees Bruin (Mr. Kees, whom the children call Mr. Kees). Every year, pupils perform a play written by the headteacher, Dreus, for the residents of a particular nursing home. This time, trainee teacher Mr. Kees is assigned to guide the children. But Mr. Kees and the children change the play because it is very old-fashioned and does not appeal to them. They also design and make different costumes, but Dreus throws them away after she finds out. The elderly residents knit new versions. Ms. Sanne, who had been on maternity leave and for whom Mr. Kees was filling in, returns to work. Mr. Kees is now made a kindergarten teacher. However, Ms. Sanne becomes overstrained again, and Dreus takes the class herself, to the pupils’ disappointment. The children include Tobias, whose father has died. His mother is sometimes depressed, but at other times feels well. He fills in random answers on his Cito test so that he will have to repeat the year and keep Mr. Kees as his teacher. He regrets it (also because Mr. Kees has been transferred to the kindergarten class) and is allowed to retake the test. Sep is Tobias’s best friend. Lisa often tells untrue stories about her previous school. Tim and Tom are a clever set of twins. The elderly residents and the kindergarten children seem like older and younger versions of the pupils, including, for example, a male set of twins and one female person with brown skin.
