A perfectionist doctor’s orderly home is upended when a former rehabilitation-clinic roommate and her children arrive for what is meant to be a one-night stay.

The story

Konstanze, a highly competent doctor with a perfectionist streak, is in contention for a vacant chief physician position. An assessment reveals a personal weakness: she struggles to say much about her friends, while colleague and rival Marit appears to fare better. Then Jackie, a former roommate from a rehabilitation clinic, turns up with her three children, seeking shelter for one night because of water damage at home. The supposedly brief visit stretches on, bringing noise and disorder into Konstanze’s carefully controlled household. Her children enjoy the looser rules, but the disruption adds to Konstanze’s already demanding work and growing strain.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Konstanze is a highly competent doctor whose perfectionism would make her an ideal candidate for the vacant chief physician position. But when an external recruitment firm assesses the candidates, her weaknesses come to light too: when asked about her friends, Konstanze can hardly think of anything to say. Her colleague and rival Marit seems to do better. Then, one afternoon, Jackie suddenly turns up at her door. Three years earlier, the two of them had shared a room at a rehabilitation clinic. Jackie has brought her three children along and needs somewhere to stay for one night because of water damage in her apartment. She has also brought sparkling wine so the two women can toast their reunion. But it is not to be just one night: supposedly, the water damage cannot be repaired over the weekend. This throws Konstanze’s life into disarray, as disorder suddenly enters her previously perfect world. Konstanze’s children, Malte and Lotte, are rather taken with their guests: now they get to eat chips and drink cola; Malte plays shooter games, and Jackie’s niece gives Lotte makeup lessons. Their mother’s strict rules about food and homework are now being called into question, too. With Konstanze having to clean up the mess all the time on top of her work, and repairs to the water damage being delayed again and again, she drives over to the apartment and learns that Jackie has been evicted. Konstanze wants to confront Jackie about the lie, but Jackie surprises her by having put everything in order while Konstanze was away. When Konstanze tries to take down the new pink curtains, she falls off the ladder and breaks both arms. Now Jackie has to look after Konstanze. The medication makes Konstanze more relaxed, and the two go to a karaoke bar and pick up two police officers. The next morning, the women have an argument. Konstanze criticizes Jackie’s way of life and says they are not really friends. Jackie, in turn, criticizes Konstanze’s carefully designed, sterile life—and points out that Malte and Lotte have confided things to her that they did not tell their mother. Jackie then leaves the apartment. The women meet again at the clinic. Jackie has just been trying to arrange help for Konstanze through Marit. They have an emotional heart-to-heart, and both realize that they are friends after all. Since neither Marit nor Konstanze gets the new chief physician position because it has instead gone to someone through nepotism, Marit voices her frustration and resigns immediately. She has meanwhile been offered a job in Hamburg. This frees up her apartment, so Jackie can move in.
