An empathetic evening-school teacher takes a group of struggling students to a lakeside youth hostel, where their problems—and an intrusive roommate—complicate his motivational program.
The story
Evening-school teacher Ralph Friesner is assigned by his new boss, Mrs. Bergmann, to lead a motivational program for students who have already failed once. The program takes place at a youth hostel beside a lake, where Ralph initially welcomes the chance for peace and quiet away from his roommate Karin. That reprieve ends when a burst pipe forces Karin from their apartment and she arrives with her suitcases; the hostel manager places her in Ralph’s room. Meanwhile, Ralph’s students bring very different challenges to the program: Keywan is recovering from alcoholism, Faheema struggles to speak in front of others, Ruth is seeking a new career while suffering from depression, and Mirco repeatedly expresses hatred of women and picks fights.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The new school year begins with a surprise for evening-school teacher Ralph Friesner. His new boss, Mrs. Bergmann, assigns him to run a special motivational program for students who have already failed once. It takes place at a youth hostel by a lake, which Ralph likes after initially being skeptical—it gives him a little peace and quiet for a while from his roommate Karin, who leaves him little privacy, and he has been considering moving out. But shortly afterward, Karin also turns up at the hostel with her suitcases packed. A burst pipe has forced her out of their apartment, so she is seeking refuge here. To make matters worse, the hostel manager, Ole, has put her in Ralph’s room because there are no others available and his room is too large anyway. The students entrusted to Ralph are all struggling with their own problems. There is Keywan, a recovering alcoholic who shares a room with the high-spirited Nick. Faheema, who stutters badly in front of other people, shares a room with Ruth, an overweight hairdresser who wants to retrain for a different career and suffers from depression. Mirco is especially troublesome: he repeatedly expresses hatred of women and keeps picking fights with the others. Ralph tries, in his empathetic way, to help the group members, offering advice and looking for solutions. After Karin causes a power outage while decorating for a small end-of-program celebration, Mrs. Bergmann comes to the hostel on insurance-related business and wants to observe Ralph’s class as well. The timing is poor, since unexpected things have just happened in the class. Nick got Keywan to drink alcohol the previous night, and Keywan vomited in the hostel hallway. Ruth has also disappeared, so despite the threat of a formal reprimand, Ralph sets off with the others to look for her. The police arrive and arrest Mirco, who tried to rape a woman the previous evening, but she managed to defend herself. Eventually, Ralph finds Ruth in a locked elevator, where she had run in a panic after Mirco tried to corner her. At the evening celebration, Ralph insists in front of Mrs. Bergmann that all his students—except Mirco—be admitted to vocational training. Ralph talks things out with Karin and says he will not move out, but that he will charge her a “fine” whenever she crosses his boundaries.
