Dzieje grzechu (1975)

Ewa Pobratyńska, a young woman from an impoverished noble family, begins an affair with Łukasz Niepołomski, a married man who is unable to obtain a divorce. He soon abandons Ewa and leaves, and the girl, still in love with him, leaves home and sets out after him. For a time, the two live in a Jewish neighborhood, where Niepołomski recovers from a wound sustained in a duel thanks to her care. Later, however, he leaves for Rome to pursue a divorce, and Ewa discovers that she is pregnant. After giving birth, she kills her child and, in search of her beloved, goes to Italy after hearing that he is being held there in prison. During this time, Count Szczerbic, who loves Ewa, looks after her. When she learns that Łukasz obtained a divorce and married a woman with a substantial dowry, the desperate Ewa accidentally becomes the lover of the bandit Pochroń, whose accomplice knows about the child she killed. Still abroad, she is blackmailed into helping with the robbery and murder of Szczerbic. She flees to Poland, where she turns to prostitution and lives with Pochroń and his accomplices. When the bandits, with her help, raid Łukasz’s apartment, Ewa manages to warn him, but is herself mortally wounded. She then dies in custody in Niepołomski’s arms.
