Full plot (contains spoilers)
A Colombian crime boss sends the pilot Fred with a large quantity of gemstones to a rendezvous in the middle of the Brazilian rainforest, near the Equator. There is a landing strip there where he is supposed to hand the cargo over to another pilot. During the flight, however, Fred goes mad and water-lands his plane on the Rio Negro, where he buries the bag on an island. By chance, he meets the poet Pia there as she is photographing a lunar eclipse. When she returns home, he follows her and shoots her for no reason. The poet’s husband returns from a trip a few hours after the murder and discovers her body. He is a well-known painter, and the couple are often seen on Brazilian television. Gil is deeply shocked. After the police formalities are completed and it is established that he is no longer a suspect in the murder, he travels to Reit in Austria; his father was Austrian. By chance, a Brazilian tourist spots him there and photographs him. Through the media, a Brazilian girl who is friends with the painter learns where he is and sends him a drawing. When Gil finds it in his mail, he decides to return. Meanwhile, the pilot, now mad, has taken up residence in a ruin beside the house where he killed the woman, and the nuns from the local convent bring him food. It is not long before the two meet (the madman secretly watches along when Gil watches television). By chance, a photograph turns up showing the pilot on the night of the lunar eclipse, taken by the painter’s wife. When the madman sees it, he rows to the place where he buried the emeralds. Gil, who had been watching him, follows. They meet on a sandbank in the river. Fred throws away the precious stones and asks Gil to “do away with him.” But Gil simply turns away without a word, apparently having forgiven him.
