A documentary follows pioneering women in German-language punk as they reunite and return to the stage decades later.

The story

This documentary looks at pioneers of German-language punk and the women’s bands and projects they formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It follows musicians including Martina Weith, Gudrun Gut, and Klaudia Schifferle from rehearsal rooms to concert stages and backstage, as some return to performing together decades later. The film also brings in younger perspectives, including Madlaina Peer, who founded OneTwoThree with Schifferle and Sara Schär in 2018. Their reflections touch on the movement’s macho culture and on what it means for women to keep making music and taking the stage as they grow older.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Just Do It! is a film about punk musicians, punk feminism, and the spirit of the late 1970s and early 1980s. It portrays pioneers of German-language punk who, 40 years later, are back onstage together. Martina Weith inspired the film’s title with the words: “Do it. Don’t talk. Do it.” In the mid-1980s, Martina Weith was the singer and saxophonist of Düsseldorf women’s punk band Östro 430. Caduff shows how the musicians came together in bands and projects back then. They included Gudrun Gut, drummer for the women’s bands Mania D and later Malaria! (also as a singer), as well as the musicians of the Swiss band Kleenex, later known as LiLiPUT. The film follows them into rehearsal rooms, onto concert stages, and backstage. “It’s important to be onstage when you’re no longer ‘so pretty and nice,’” says the now 70-year-old Klaudia Schifferle. Madlaina Peer, who founded the band OneTwoThree in 2018 with Klaudia Schifferle, former singer and bassist of Kleenex, and Sara Schär (TNT), comments: “The punk movement wasn’t shaped by feminism; on the contrary, it was very macho.” However, structural sexism is not at the center of Einfach machen! She-Punks von 1977 bis heute. Caduff is interested in the simple act of doing: in how the musicians of that time came together in bands and projects. The film follows them into rehearsal rooms, onto concert stages, and backstage. For Schifferle, now 70, it is also an important message to stand onstage as a woman who is no longer “so pretty and nice.” Like her bandmates, she impresses with her composure. She says with a certain sense of relief that today she no longer has to fight for her place.
