Women pioneers revisit the sexism and power structures of 1990s German entertainment television from a contemporary feminist perspective.
The story
Through interviews with German entertainment-industry pioneers Maren Kroymann, Hella von Sinnen, Bettina Böttinger, Gaby Köster and Esther Schweins, this documentary examines the male-dominated television entertainment culture of 1990s Germany. It pairs their perspectives with flashbacks to excerpts from popular programs such as Wetten, dass..?, Herzblatt and Die Harald Schmidt Show. The film considers how sexist, misogynistic and homophobic humor and attitudes were part of this environment, and how male dominance disadvantaged female comedians and cabaret performers compared with their male colleagues. It frames humor as an expression of power within a patriarchal system and reflects on these practices through a contemporary feminist lens in the post-MeToo era.
