Full plot (contains spoilers)
A young dolphin named Daniel Alejandro leaves the safety of his pod and island and ventures into the unknown in search of a dream: to discover the true purpose of his life. The journey will not be easy; there will be dangers and challenges, friends and enemies, but Daniel Alejandro will have to trust the voice of his heart to achieve his goal, all the more if he is to fulfill his dream. One day, the voice of the ocean speaks to Daniel, and shortly afterward a manta ray visits the lagoon. The voice of the ocean has sent her as an ambassador. Daniel is told that the sun will soon have reached the right place and that he should be on his way. Daniel does not understand what this means, but he is determined to leave the lagoon and bravely leaps over the reef. In the vast ocean, Daniel meets Carl the squid. The two become friends and travel together, listening to the orders of Lucius, a giant barracuda. Daniel and Carl are pursued by Lucius, but manage to escape. The voice of the sea tells Daniel to follow the sun and pay attention to the signs along the way. Only in this way will he finally be able to ride the crest of the perfect wave and restore the world of dreams to all the creatures of the ocean. They come across a large purple clam, which Carl has heard can make every wish come true. However, when they go inside, they meet Maitre, the giant old octopus, who tells Daniel about a solar eclipse. Daniel returns to the purple clam once more and frees the sea creatures Maitre had kept there as slaves. They meet Mr. Bite, a lonely great white shark, who complains that he can never have a long conversation with fish—not even with Squishy, a baby remora. Daniel warns him that he should try not to eat his conversation partners right away, and Mr. Bite promises to do better. A sunfish now explains to them that Lucius is a dream-eater who swallows all the dreams of the sea creatures. The sunfish dreams of touching the sun once in its life and tries to swim toward it every day at sunset. Lucius tries to steal Daniel’s dreams but fails. When he tries to kill Daniel, all the sea creatures Daniel met on his journey come to his aid. After the voice of the sea speaks to Lucius, he shrinks to his normal size and turns out to be a dolphin. Beside some sunken ships, they find gold coins, and Kia the humpback whale explains that this is why people long ago forgot how to dream. As the solar eclipse approaches, a huge wave draws near Daniel. After riding his perfect wave, the voice of the sea tells him that, despite all the difficulties, he believed in himself, followed his dream, and found the meaning of life. Daniel returns to his crush, where everyone is so excited by his stories that they all leave their lagoon, explore the oceans, and dream again.
