The story

Recently widowed retirees Mr. Nádor and Mrs. Komáromi meet in a cemetery while tending the graves of their first spouses. Though their earlier marriages were conventional and lacked deeper feeling, their encounter sparks a powerful mutual passion. After knowing each other for barely 48 hours, they decide to marry. Their adult children, accustomed to the existing family arrangement and increasingly interested in their parents’ pensions, are outraged by what they consider a rash choice. They conspire to prevent the couple from building independent lives together.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The story’s protagonists are two recently widowed retirees who meet in a cemetery while tending the grave monuments of their first spouses. Their previous marriages were merely conventional, devoid of any deeper feeling, but this encounter sparks an emotional passion in both of them. Mr. Nádor is already a 61-year-old grandfather, and the widowed Mrs. Komáromi is only three years younger than he is—although no grandchild has yet arrived in her family—yet after knowing each other for barely 48 hours, they decide to join their lives in marriage. Their adult children, who have grown comfortable with the old arrangement and are slowly beginning to eye even their parents’ pensions, are utterly outraged by what they see as a hasty decision, and hatch a veritable conspiracy to stop their parents from starting independent lives.
