When their teenage daughter falls in with an older boyfriend, her parents struggle to protect her as she becomes entangled with drugs.

The story

Maria and Paul Hofer are a successful married couple whose 16-year-old daughter, Nadja, has begun dating 23-year-old Robert “Robi” Bauer. Nadja plans to travel to India with him, but her parents oppose the trip. Their concern deepens when police call to report that Robi has beaten Nadja. Nadja resists her mother’s attempt to take her to hospital and says that she and Robi had only been smoking weed. The ensuing confrontation pits the parents’ efforts to bring Nadja home against the couple’s determination to stay together, as the Hofers try to understand how serious the danger has become.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Maria and Paul Hofer are a professionally successful married couple. Their 16-year-old daughter, Nadja, has recently started dating 23-year-old Robert “Robi” Bauer. She is planning a trip to India with him, but her parents are against it. Robi had started working for the Red Cross, but was sent home after arriving late for work. One night, Nadja’s parents receive a call from the police because Robi has beaten Nadja. Maria wants to take Nadja to a hospital, but Nadja resists, saying they had only been smoking weed. Soon afterward, an argument breaks out between Nadja’s parents on one side and Robi and Nadja on the other. The parents want Nadja to come home with them, but Robi and Nadja run off. Later, Nadja is found unconscious in a subway station and taken to hospital. According to her treating physician, Dr. Schell, THC and benzodiazepines were detected in her system. Drug specialist Dr. Gruber tells the parents that the medication their daughter took is given to drug addicts as a substitute drug. Robi’s blue lips suggest that he is an addict going through withdrawal. Nadja’s parents take away her phone and lock her in at home. Nadja, however, wants to be with Robi. She believes that he has now kicked drugs and that she helped him do it. Maria, Paul and Nadja meet with Robi and his mother, Gabriele, who is delighted with Nadja because she is supporting her son through withdrawal. Paul allows Robi to visit Nadja on the condition that he is completely sober. Police officer Silhavy advises Nadja to report Robi for assault. He also suspects that Robi, who is not undergoing treatment, will be back among the addicts at Karlsplatz within two weeks at the latest and will need money. Silhavy sends Nadja and Maria to Ms. Dr. Walter at the intervention centre for battered women, and to the youth welfare office. After Nadja’s mother locks her inside the apartment again, Nadja escapes via the roof terrace. She does not return home until the next day. After a visit to school, Nadja runs away from her parents again. She had also stolen money from her father. Maria eventually finds her daughter at Karlsplatz, in the opera passage, with Robi and Ira, who is also drug-dependent. Nadja flees from her mother onto a subway train. During a confrontation with a dealer, Maria is injured. At Wilhelminenspital, she receives a call saying that her daughter has apparently been found dead from an overdose. At the pathology department, the Hofers are relieved to discover that the dead girl, who had a computer registered in Nadja Hofer’s name with her, is not their daughter but Ira. The Hofers find their daughter at home; Robi had injected her with drugs. Her parents take Nadja to hospital. After she has recovered somewhat there, Nadja runs away again with Robi. Paul lies in wait for Robi at night and threatens to hire a hitman if he does not leave Nadja alone. He drives Robi to Schwechat Airport and buys him a plane ticket to Goa, where he will send him €500 a month. If Robi contacts Nadja, Paul will stop the payments. Robi does indeed withdraw the money over the next two months. Maria tells her colleague and friend Anna that people had given Nadja drugs, but that until then she could not believe Nadja was actually taking them: “Not my daughter,” she had thought. After successfully completing drug treatment, Nadja returns home. There, Robi’s mother Gabriele is waiting at the door. She has received a call from the embassy in India: Robi has been found dead from an overdose. Maria and Paul finally celebrate Nadja’s 17th birthday with her.
