Full plot (contains spoilers)
Fany, the daughter of a flower seller, is engaged to Fritz, an employee at an engineering firm. Through Dr. Thielen, a physician, she meets a ballet master who discovers her dancing talent and trains her. She quickly builds a career as a ballerina and rises to become a soloist at the theater. One evening, when a fire breaks out during a performance, it is the young sculptor Holger who saves her life. Before long, the two grow closer than her fiancé would like. Holger wants Fany to pose for him, but, as expected, Fritz objects. Things turn out as they must: Fany’s engagement to Fritz is broken off, and she marries Holger. But after a brief period of happiness, the marriage is under an unlucky star. They grow estranged, and Holger is unfaithful while Fany suffers quietly. One evening, she catches her husband in flagrante in a private booth with another woman. Even so, Fany tries to save her marriage, but her husband rejects all her efforts. Fany dies of a broken heart.
