Japan, autumn 1573. The Sengoku period is coming to an end, and Oda Nobunaga’s armies are victorious. During the siege of Odani Castle, Sasa Hayatenosuke, a warrior of the Azai clan, cannot bring himself to flee from his duty. He remains deaf to the pleas of Kano, the woman he loves, and entrusts her to Tachibana Jurota, a somewhat cowardly soldier. On the night before the decisive battle, Jurota leaves Odani Castle with Kano. The next day, the Azai clan’s army is defeated. Wounded, Hayatenosuke is taken in and cared for by Oryo, whose father, Toju, leads a band that strips the soldiers killed in battle of their belongings.
