The story
Thanos, a shepherd, returns from Germany after failing to find work and dreams of leaving for Australia. A childhood friend slits the throats of Thanos’s livestock to make him stay until the friend finishes military service. Thanos’s mother has tried to arrange his marriage to Despina, but her father, Vlahopoulos, who employs Thanos, refuses the match and wants her to marry into a wealthier family.

Thanos, a shepherd, returns from Germany, where he failed to find work. He dreams of leaving again, this time for Australia. One of his childhood friends slits the throats of his livestock to force him to stay until the friend has finished his military service. Katina, his mother, wants to keep him nearby and has therefore tried to arrange his marriage to Despina. But Despina’s father, Vlahopoulos, Thanos’s employer, refuses to give his daughter to Thanos. He wants her to marry into a wealthier family. Thanos then rebels against provincial rural society and takes Despina with him. The lovers are caught and killed.
