The story

Paolo Solinas, a young parish priest, returns to his native village in Sardinia and becomes caught up in a feud between the Barras and Corraines families. He remembers his earlier love for Agnese, a daughter of the Barras family, and tries to bring the rivals to peace with her help. Costantino, head of the Corraines family, proposes that his nephew marry Agnese, a plan that seems to offer a way toward reconciliation. But Agnese’s own feelings have not been considered: still in love with Paolo, she refuses the marriage, and the conflict threatens to flare up again.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Paolo Solinas, a young parish priest, returns to his native village in Sardinia, where he becomes caught up in the feud between two rival families: the Barras and the Corraines. Remembering the love that bound him to Agnese, one of the Barras daughters, years earlier, Paolo tries, with the young woman acting as mediator, to make peace between the two families. Everything could end happily, given Costantino, head of the Corraines family, wants his nephew to marry Agnese; however, no one has taken the young woman’s feelings into account. Still in love with Paolo, she categorically refuses the marriage. The war therefore begins again, more violently than before. Having realized that he is still attracted to Agnese and that she feels the same way, Paolo has only one alternative: to ask for a transfer. But it is Agnese who leaves, while Costantino, head of the Corraines family, turns himself in to the authorities.
