A mosaic portrait of Ukrainian school life continuing under the threat of war.
The story
After Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, schools remain open despite the constant threat from Russian forces. This mosaic film glimpses school life in different parts of the country as teachers and students try to continue their lessons. It observes everyday moments, including children crying on their first day of school, an older student taking on the role of Saint Nicholas, and graduates receiving colorful sashes. The war’s effects intrude on ordinary routines: students have to seek shelter in emergency shelters during air raids, while classes continue in another wing of a school whose principal points out damaged parts of the building.
