A portrait of children caught in the consequences of the Chechen War, across a military academy, a ruined city, and a refugee orphanage.
The story
The film follows the Chechen War and its effects on children across three settings. At the Kronstadt cadet academy, boys around the age of 12 are drilled into soldiers. In Grozny, Chechnya’s capital, Hadizhat Gataeva searches among the city’s ruins for children left to fend for themselves. A third setting is an orphanage for refugee children in Ingushetia, near the Chechen border, which Gataeva runs. Together, these places form a portrait of the human consequences of a conflict described as seemingly unending.

Melancholia 3 Rooms tells the story of the Chechen War and the children sacrificed in its name. The three rooms are: the Kronstadt cadet academy, where boys around the age of 12 are drilled into soldiers; Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, where a woman, Hadizhat Gataeva, searches for children left to fend for themselves amid the city’s ruins; and an orphanage for refugee children in Ingushetia, near the border with Chechnya, run by Hadizhat Gataeva. Together, the three rooms form a harrowing portrayal of the consequences of a war that never seems to end.
