Full plot (contains spoilers)
The dance teacher Susanne is in the midst of a relationship crisis with her husband, Till, who runs a dance studio, after ten years of marriage. She confides in her best friend Vivien, who advises her to write a message in a bottle. Susanne goes to the Spree, writes some wistful lines on a sheet of paper, puts it in an empty bottle, and lets it drift on the water. A few days later, a man contacts her anonymously by email, and she feels understood by him. She has no idea that it was Till who fished the bottle out of the water, and that he is the anonymous writer. Till also feels more alive, since he can express his feelings freely and someone is “listening” to him; he, too, has no idea who he is writing to. Susanne is determined to meet the “stranger” and arranges a meeting with him. But when she sees Till in the park, she hides from him so he cannot surprise her there with the “stranger.” Till, meanwhile, waits in vain for his “date” and is very disappointed. By this point, Susanne is having technical problems with her email account, so she cannot explain to the “stranger” why she did not show up for their arranged meeting. Till is therefore puzzled that the sender of his message in a bottle has simply stopped getting in touch. As both chase after their dream of a new, anonymous acquaintance, their marriage begins to fall apart. Till confides in Susanne’s friend and learns that Susanne was the one who sent the message in a bottle, and that he has fallen in love with his own wife. Deep down, he had never really stopped loving her; he had simply told her far too seldom. He now makes up for it and leaves a message in a bottle with a declaration of love at her door. Susanne is very moved, and at last they talk things through. After all, through their emails, they now both know what had been missing from their marriage and what they should do better from now on.
