The story
Couples therapist Luisa is nearing burnout, burdened by work stress, an affair, and dieting. She lives with her husband Richard in a show home owned by his real estate company. When Richard throws out his back, Luisa’s plan to spend a carefree weekend with his boss Leopold during Richard’s class reunion falls through. The next morning, Luisa encounters a copy of herself, whom she names Ann. With little instruction, the initially clumsy and naïve double is asked to take Luisa’s place beside Richard, allowing Luisa to spend time with Leopold. The arrangement works at first, but Luisa grows jealous when she sees how well Ann and Richard get along.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Couples therapist Luisa is on the verge of burnout, under constant stress from work, an affair, and dieting. She lives with her husband Richard in a show home belonging to the real estate company he works for. When Luisa’s plan to use Richard’s class reunion for a carefree weekend with his boss Leopold falls through because Richard has thrown out his back, she is surprised one morning, on getting up, to encounter a copy of herself. She names her Ann. With only minimal instruction, the initially clumsy and naïve Ann is tasked with taking Luisa’s place at Richard’s side so Luisa can enjoy herself with Leopold. It works, but when Luisa comes home and sees how well Ann and Richard get along, she becomes jealous. A bizarre series of mix-ups ensues, with Luisa and Ann taking turns spending time with Richard and Leopold and vying with each other for the men’s attention. The lustful Leopold doesn’t notice, but Richard finds his wife increasingly strange. Luisa’s fruitless attempts to keep Ann under control drive her to the brink of despair, while her psychiatrist tries to make her understand that she is only imagining Ann’s existence. When Ann, feeling rejected by Luisa, throws herself from a bridge to her death, Luisa is initially relieved, but shortly afterward her reflection once again takes on a life of its own as Ann. The complications begin anew, until Luisa, who has completely lost control of the situation, sees no solution but to murder Ann brutally. Richard has long since begun a relationship with his dentist and moves out. Shortly afterward, a scream of horror comes from the house: another copy of Luisa, Steffi, has appeared. In the final shot, the three identical, similarly dressed women are on a guided mudflat walk to a Hallig island.
