Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 2030, 80-year-old former actress Mrs. Winkler lives alone and in seclusion. Her husband and stage partner, Bruno, has died; her daughter Emi and granddaughter Billie are the family she has left. When Emi accepts a theater engagement and her mother needs intensive assistance after an accident, a care robot takes over her care because there is not enough money for a place in a nursing home or for home care. Mrs. Winkler is initially skeptical of the robot. To her delight, it can recite Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, so she names it Pawlowitsch; it rekindles her interest in life and her will to live. But Pawlowitsch is not only Mrs. Winkler’s companion: it also transmits her continually worsening vital signs to a healthcare system focused on efficiency. Eventually, Mrs. Winkler also recognizes the possibility that the robot could assist her in dying. Before then, with the care robot’s support, she leaves her house several more times.
