The story
On Christmas Eve, seven-year-old Micha and his mother, Marianne, flee his violent father, taking only one suitcase. Marianne reflects on her childhood in East Germany and her wish to return there. She comes upon an ice-covered place with a visible church tower, surrounded by emptiness and darkness.

On Christmas Eve, seven-year-old Micha and his mother Marianne flee from his violent father. They have time to take only one suitcase with them. Marianne reflects on her childhood in East Germany, the part of Germany she now wants to return to. She comes upon a place covered in ice, with a church tower visible. Everything else she discovers is emptiness and darkness. After seven days, she finally encounters people, all wandering around and seemingly lost. Eventually, she finds shelter in a hotel, but only temporarily.
