Full plot (contains spoilers)

Little Joachim spends his childhood with his family on the grounds of the psychiatric hospital. He, too, occasionally has screaming fits, but these are handled as a matter of routine. He falls in love with Marlene, who is at risk of suicide. At Christmas, he has to endure an emotional outburst from his mother, making him realize that his parents’ relationship is in serious trouble. Joachim learns that his childhood sweetheart has died by suicide, and he has another fit. He starts a new life in America. When he returns home after his brother’s accidental death, his parents seem to have reconciled. In a therapy group, his father admits that he has terminal cancer. In the final scene, Joachim looks at a shelf full of aquariums, with bubbles rising in them. A forest can be seen behind them.
