A young countess finds affection and jealousy competing for a place in her guardian’s household.
The story
After her father dies, the young Countess von Hagen is taken in by Joseph Königswart, an old friend of her father. The Baron shares his home with his cousin and her son, Reinhold. The countess soon attracts both men, but rejects the younger Reinhold, while Joseph hesitates to reveal his feelings because of his age. The countess, however, returns Joseph’s affection. Tensions rise as Reinhold’s mother becomes jealous of the newcomer’s place in the household and accuses her of theft, setting the countess against the hostility of the family around her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After her father’s death, the young Countess von Hagen is taken in by Joseph Königswart, a friend of her father’s from his youth. The Baron lives under the same roof as his cousin and her son. Before long, she has both men smitten with her. She rebuffs the advances of the young Reinhold, while Baron Joseph, because of his advanced age, does not dare confess his feelings for her—even though the Countess returns those feelings. Reinhold’s mother grows increasingly jealous, since she is no longer the only woman in the household or the one who takes center stage. She therefore accuses the young woman of theft. Deeply shaken by this outrageous accusation, the Countess sees only one way out that is fitting for a noblewoman of her station: she intends to shoot herself—conveniently, in the hunting pavilion on the estate. But the young lady does not aim accurately and only wounds herself. Joseph rushes to her, declares his feelings, and becomes engaged to the Countess.
