A devoted painter’s settled provincial life is upended when her husband announces that he is leaving her for a young dancer.
The story
Judy teaches English at a provincial high school and lives a comfortable, apparently peaceful life with her bank-executive husband and their two young children. Painting dominates her attention: on weekends she leaves her students’ papers aside to paint, and her canvases gradually take over the apartment and disrupt her routine. Just as she has finally decided to give up her job, her life changes when her husband tells her he is leaving her for a young dancer.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Judy is an English teacher at a provincial high school. She leads a comfortable, provincial, seemingly peaceful life with her husband, a bank executive, and their two young children. But Judy thinks only about painting. At weekends, she leaves her students’ papers aside and paints. Her paintings take over the apartment and disrupt her routine. Just as she has finally decided to give up her job, her life is turned upside down when her husband tells her he is leaving her for a young dancer... It is an ordinary story, but Judy’s artistic side changes its course. She could have hated the young mistress, but her hatred turns into curiosity, then attraction. Odile fascinates her, and she spends hours watching her at the dance studio. She even becomes friends with her. Then, suddenly, on an impulse, she sets off with Evelyne, the mother of her childhood friend—a dotty old lady chasing the ghost of her brother, who disappeared in Brazil—on a secret trip, an escape from shaky compromises and futile solutions...
