The story
Hanna’s father is addicted to alcohol and drinks away the family’s money. To help supplement the household budget, she takes a job as a model at an art academy, where she meets and falls in love with the young painter Marten.

Hanna’s father is addicted to alcohol and drinks away the money. To help supplement the household budget, she takes a job as a model at an art academy. There she meets and falls in love with the young painter Marten. He does begin an affair with her, but soon forgets her when he sets off for a period of study in Italy. Disappointed, Hanna also starts drinking to console herself. After returning from Italy, Marten no longer recognizes Hanna. He approaches her in a bar and asks her to model for an allegorical depiction of drunkenness. Hanna agrees. But when the painting is finished, she destroys it in revenge. Like her father, she meets an untimely end.
