Full plot (contains spoilers)
While an inept police officer uselessly pursues him, the bandit Stefano Pelloni, known as the Passatore, pulls off one robbery after another. He even turns up with his entire gang at a performance in the Romagna town of Forlimpopoli, attended by the papal legate himself, and robs the audience of all their money. Lucky in love as well as in banditry, and as cunning as they come, Pelloni then manages—although the man giving him a hard time is now the very head of the police, Zambelli, his former seminary companion—to rescue Garibaldi from the Austrian guards pursuing him. Determined to trap Pelloni, Zambelli uses an ambitious bandit who has fallen into his hands to set a snare, luring Pelloni to Castrocaro with the prospect of stealing jewels from a fake Austrian archduchess. This time Pelloni finds himself in serious difficulty, but the police chief himself allows him to escape on condition that he give up banditry forever.
