The story

Emma, a registrar from Munich, is in a crisis after more than ten years of marriage. She is unhappy at home and at work, and neither her hyper-intelligent son nor sessions with couples’ therapist Dr. Reitlinger can improve her troubled marriage to Thomas. While searching a bookstore for advice on marriage, Emma unexpectedly meets musician Ben Martin, whose path crossed hers twelve years earlier. They had once fallen in love but never openly confessed their feelings. Now Emma is married, while Ben is on the verge of marrying his manager. Emma is asked to conduct their civil wedding ceremony, putting her old feelings and present responsibilities on a collision course.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Emma, a registrar from Munich, has fallen into a crisis after more than ten years of marriage. She is no longer happy at home or at work. She marries couples without enthusiasm, and her own marriage to Thomas is in serious trouble—something neither their hyper-intelligent son nor sessions with the couples’ therapist, Dr. Reitlinger, can change. By chance, while looking in a bookstore for books offering advice on marriage, she runs into the musician Ben Martin. Their paths had parted twelve years earlier. Back then, Ben Martin had become famous as the composer and singer of the one-hit wonder “Ein bisschen für immer.” The two of them had also sung their favorite hit, “Hallelujah,” together as a duet with piano accompaniment, and had fallen in love. Neither had openly confessed their love to the other at the time. When Ben tried to tell her that he had written his hit just for her, Emma had already gone her own way. The young love between Ben and Emma flares up again, even though Emma is married and Ben is on the verge of marrying his manager. Emma is supposed to marry the two of them in a civil ceremony; during the ceremony, she flees the wedding room. Ben and Emma eventually get together.
