A group of refugees from Afghanistan and Syria is being driven west in a van by a gang of people smugglers. One of the children in the group complains of severe stomach pains, but the journey continues regardless. The next morning, the girl is dead. The young Lara Scherer finds the child and her father on the country road and alerts the police. Rainer Witt begins the investigation, but the father, Ahmad Bashmani, remains silent about the circumstances of the death and the smugglers. The child died of blood poisoning; timely medical help could have saved her. At a photo shoot at a shooting range, Lara took a Luger Parabellum and is bent on taking revenge on Ivo Klose, whose dog disfigured her years ago. At the same time, she has feelings for Fabienne Leppin, Klose’s young accomplice, who does not care about Lara’s scars. Klose is feeling pretty bad at his hideout in the woods because he has upset his stomach. When Lara finally finds him, confronts him with her gun drawn, and he crawls away from her, he falls into one of his own pitfalls and dies. He had contracted anthrax by eating a badger. Lara tells Karin that she stole the gun from a man named Kuchar. He had also driven a van that Lara saw before she found Bashmani and the dead child. Karin goes to his boat and follows him when he rides away on a motorcycle. She watches Kuchar receive money at the harbor from two other men for his smuggling activities. As he turns around, he is shot from behind and dragged into a refrigerated truck. Karin manages to lock the men inside the refrigerated truck and drives away. She still tries to notify the police, but veers off the road and rolls her car over several times.
