Karin is rescued injured after her car accident. She leads Rainer Witt and the Polish police to the place where Kuchar was murdered. But the refrigerated truck is nowhere to be found. Michail Leskow has already found it; inside, alongside Kuchar, were two more frozen bodies—those of his son Sascha and an Uzbek accomplice. At the scrapyard, Leskow finds a fine notice addressed to Ben Witt, with Ben’s address, in Karin’s wrecked car. From Kuchar’s sister Ewa, the police learn that Kuchar must have only recently entered the human-smuggling business, since otherwise he would not have been so short of money. Leskow makes Kuchar’s body disappear in the Baltic Sea and has the other two bodies cremated with the help of an employee at a crematorium. When he then goes to see Karin, the police set a trap for him and shoot him dead. Fingerprints on an urn in Leskow’s car lead the police to the crematorium employee, who says that Elena Herzog, the head of the home-care service, recommended Leskow to him. Herzog admits that Sascha Leskow supplied her. When Sascha failed to show up, she says, she informed his father Michail, who went looking for him. Karin is still able to find in her wrecked car the gun Lara had stolen, which Karin had intended to bring to Kuchar. Ewa tells Karin that Kuchar had stepped in for the smuggling operation and that Karin’s estranged husband, Jörn, had been pulling the strings. Karin had just begun developing a relationship with Jörn. Karin finds the phones of the abducted people in Jörn’s desk and confronts him. He admits that Herzog handled the finances for the smuggling operation, that Kuchar had stepped in for him, and that he was not to blame for the girl’s death. When Jörn tries to flee in his car, Karin manages to shoot him in the leg with Kuchar’s gun. He and Herzog are arrested. In the final scene, Jörn’s daughter Lara comes to Karin and says she still wants to finish the job she had started: building Karin a new home. Lara and her current girlfriend, Fabienne Leppin, begin the work.
