A hotel manager brings his wife along on a work trip to Mallorca, where a troubled hotel’s haunting disrupts their long-delayed honeymoon.
The story
After ten years, hotel manager Michael Hagen hopes to finally take the honeymoon he promised his wife, Rebecca. But his boss sends him to Mallorca to investigate the luxurious El Sol, a former five-star hotel that has lost a star as guests flee and revenue falls. Though he has already booked a dream trip to the Maldives, Michael accepts the assignment rather than risk possible staff cuts. Unable to admit that work has interrupted their plans again, he brings Rebecca with him and pretends they are on holiday. At the hotel, employee Ramon tells him it is haunted by strange creatures; a face-to-face encounter with a ghost soon makes Michael reconsider.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Michael Hagen promised his wife Rebecca that after ten years they would finally be able to take the honeymoon they had missed, which had not been possible until then because of his job as a hotel manager. But his boss, Brinkmann, puts a spoke in his plans once again: Michael is to go to Mallorca immediately and find out what is going wrong at the luxurious El Sol hotel. The former five-star hotel recently lost a star, guests are leaving in a hurry, and revenue is plummeting. Since Hagen has already booked their dream vacation in the Maldives, he tries to resist, but when his boss tells him that staff cuts at the company are a possibility, and his ambitious colleague Julia Sander offers to take over his position, he gives in. However, he does not have the courage to tell his wife the truth and cancel on her yet again because of work. So he takes her with him on his work assignment to Mallorca, where he intends to hide his work from her and pretend they are enjoying a carefree honeymoon. On arriving at the hotel, Hagen finds the former general manager frozen in a chest freezer; he had died of a heart attack recently. Hagen appoints Ramon Vasquez, a hotel employee from Aragon, as his successor. When Ramon says the hotel is haunted and strange creatures are roaming about, Hagen does not want to believe him at first, but a face-to-face encounter with a ghost soon convinces him. Meanwhile, Julia Sander, who had been counting on a promotion, overhears a phone conversation between Brinkmann and Hagen in which Brinkmann speaks disparagingly about her and says he prefers Hagen. She then sets off for Mallorca and secretly books a room at the hotel. The reason for the mysterious events at the hotel is the occultist Van Haal, who once performed there as a magician but opened a gateway to Hell. Fifty years ago, Ramon’s uncle Pepe burned down the old hotel while fighting Van Haal, banishing him through the gateway into Hell. Pepe tells Hagen and Vasquez that Van Haal is trying to return from Hell and that they must intercept him at the fortress above the hotel. When a fire-breathing creature attacks them there, they manage to turn it back into a small puppy using a bottle of magical cat tears Pepe gave them. In the meantime, Julia Sander secretly films the destruction at the hotel and sends the footage to Brinkmann. As a result, Hagen is fired by his boss. Hotel entertainer Toni has meanwhile been possessed by Van Haal’s powers and made into his accomplice. Van Haal orders him to bring him a pregnant woman, and with her, an unborn soul. But Toni is unable to obtain an unborn soul, so he simply kidnaps Rebecca, intending to get her pregnant later. Van Haal is furious because Toni has failed and the window of time for his return is closing. But then Van Haal begins to materialize on Earth through the gateway to Hell after all; apparently, Rebecca was already pregnant by her husband. Rebecca manages just in time to destroy a prism used for the transition, through which Van Haal is still connected. He is thus hurled back into Hell, and the gateway closes again.
