George (2013)

Dramatized film sequences and flashbacks using historical footage show the key stages in actor Heinrich George’s life, from the Nazis’ seizure of power to his final theatrical performance at the Hohenschönhausen prison camp. The film is framed by scenes of an interrogation that Heinrich George must undergo. The Soviet People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) tries to piece together George’s involvement with the Nazi regime. The film addresses his roles in the propaganda films *Jud Süß* and *Kolberg*, as well as his efforts on behalf of Jewish colleagues and opponents of the regime while he was running the Schiller Theater. In real-life scenes, Götz George explains what it was like for him to play his own father.
