The story

Set against the Nuremberg trial, the film interweaves dramatized scenes and flashbacks with colorized original footage and new material in which eyewitnesses and descendants visit original locations and comment on events. Its central figure is Ernst Wolfgang Michel, a journalist from Mannheim and the only journalist in the group to have survived a concentration camp. With Theodor Heuss’s help, Michel becomes a correspondent for the German General News Agency in Nuremberg, where he meets Seweryna Szmaglewska, a Polish resistance fighter and Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor who is one of two women to testify at the trial.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Against the backdrop of the trial, dramatised scenes, flashbacks, colourised original footage, and new material—in which eyewitnesses and descendants visit the original locations and comment on the events—are interwoven. At the centre of the story is Ernst Wolfgang Michel from Mannheim, the youngest of the journalists and also the only one to have survived a concentration camp. Through the efforts of Theodor Heuss, Michel became a correspondent for the German General News Agency in Nuremberg. There he meets Seweryna Szmaglewska, a Polish resistance fighter and also a survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. She is one of two women who testify as witnesses at the trial. Dramatised scenes also focus on Hermann Göring and his lawyer, Otto Stahmer. The screenplay is based on Seweryna Szmaglewska’s novel *The Innocents in Nuremberg* and was written by Dirk Eisfeld. The film is directed by Carsten Gutschmidt. It was shown at film festivals in 2025 and premiered in November 2025 on ARD’s Das Erste.
