A scholar searching for a respectable new love finds his romantic hopes tested by the morally dubious world around her.

The story

In a “sinful” big city in the 1920s, scholar Dr. Gonzales marries a young woman with a bad reputation. When he recognizes what he sees as her questionable character, he turns away from her and looks elsewhere. He then meets another young woman from a socially disreputable background: her mother runs a boarding house and is regarded as deeply immoral, while her sisters are described as ill-mannered and lascivious. Despite her upbringing, the newcomer proves respectable and is not averse to adventure. Gonzales must contend with the sinister, morally dubious figures who surround her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Somewhere in a “sinful” big city in the 1920s: The scholar Dr. Gonzales marries a young woman with a bad reputation, who is considered wanton. When Gonzales sees through her questionable character, he turns away from his depraved wife and looks elsewhere. Once again, he comes across a young woman, but she too comes from a socially disreputable—in other words, “shady”—background. Her mother, who runs a boarding house, is considered depraved and deeply immoral, while the two sisters are ill-mannered and lascivious, respectively. Yet the newcomer in Gonzales’s life proves respectable despite her upbringing, though she is not averse to adventure. For the scholar, the environment in which his beloved lives is a constant challenge: sinister figures, elegantly dressed but morally dubious, are everywhere.
