A bullied, frequently tardy 11-year-old faces a new upheaval when he learns he is losing his hair.
The story
Herman is a kind but difficult 11-year-old who is bullied by classmates and disliked by his teachers, especially Tønne, who resents his lateness and what the teacher considers silly excuses. After a visit to barber Tjukken, Herman learns that he is beginning to lose his hair. He takes the news very badly, and his distress often causes him to hurt people who are trying to help. At home, his father works as a crane operator and talks about seeing all the way to America from his crane; his mother works in a shop whose owner’s son is someone neither she nor Herman likes.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Herman is a kind but somewhat difficult 11-year-old boy. The other students at school bully him, and the teachers don’t like him very much either. His teacher Tønne in particular dislikes Herman because he is always late and comes up with silly excuses for it. After a visit to the barber, Tjukken, Herman learns that he is starting to lose his hair. Herman takes his illness very badly, and he often ends up hurting the people who try to help him. Herman’s father works as a crane operator and is always saying that he can see all the way to America from his crane. His mother works at a shop owned by Mrs. Jacobsen and run by her son, Jacobsen Jr., a person neither Herman nor his mother likes very much. Herman’s grandfather is the only one who actually manages to reach out to Herman and help him when he really needs it.
