A village doctor questions the apparent heart-failure diagnosis of a patient who dies the day after she examined him.
The story
Dr. Ellen Roth, a young doctor who works extra shifts at a large clinic, moves to a village in northern Germany to practice as a country doctor. She has been held financially liable for lasting harm to a patient after an alleged misdiagnosis. The villagers are initially skeptical, but her practice soon fills after she helps deliver a calf. When she examines Peter Bertel, his ECG shows no abnormalities; he is found dead the next day, and the emergency doctor assumes heart failure. Roth doubts that diagnosis, and the ECG is missing from his file.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Dr. Ellen Roth is a young doctor who is constantly working extra shifts at a large clinic and is held financially liable for the lasting harm suffered by patient Theissen after an alleged misdiagnosis. She moves to a village in northern Germany to work as a country doctor. At first, the villagers are very skeptical of her, but after she helps deliver a calf, her practice is soon full. When she examines Peter Bertel, his ECG shows no abnormalities. Nevertheless, he is found dead the next day, and the emergency doctor assumes he died of heart failure. Dr. Ellen Roth doubts this diagnosis. If that is what happened, then she would have made another mistake. The ECG has disappeared from the patient’s file. In search of the truth, she breaks into the funeral home at night to take a blood sample from the deceased Peter Bertel, who is due to be buried the following day. Her suspicion proves correct: Mr. Bertel was poisoned with an overdose of pesticide. A family tragedy lies behind the crime. It turns out that Mr. Bertel had beaten his wife, Marie, for years, while she endured it all without complaint. When he seemingly extended the abuse to their daughter Kim, Mrs. Bertel resorted to poison and killed her husband. Only too late does it come to light that it was always Paul, the village mayor Robert Wank’s son, who inflicted Kim’s injuries. At the end of the film, she visits Mr. Theissen, who is already on the road to recovery.
